Role Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Tool Engineer to join our team, providing robust technical support for our U.S. and Mexican operations. This role focuses on the industrialization of injection molds, DFM reviews, and support for accurate RFQ cost calculations to ensure tools meet quality, cost, and timeline expectations. The ideal candidate combines hands-on tooling expertise with technical project coordination and supplier collaboration. This position supports the Mexican plant remotely and requires the ability to travel occasionally for on-site visits (up to 2 weeks abroad if needed).
Key Responsibilities:
Tool Engineering & Industrialization
- Troubleshoot, industrialize, and optimize injection molding tools
- Perform tool design reviews, mold flow analyses, and DFM (Design for Manufacturability) assessments to identify and address risks early
- Review article data (draft, wall thickness, injection points) and collaborate with customers or engineering services to improve part design
- Develop and maintain detailed tool specifications and ensure alignment with tooling partners worldwide (US, Canada, Mexico, China, Europe)
- Apply risk analysis and lessons learned to improve tooling quality, performance, and future designs
- Support technical issue resolution during tool trials, production ramp-up, and ongoing production
- Coordinate with internal Process Engineers and Tooling Management to align activities and resources
- Lead and guide technical teams, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met
Technical RFQ & Costing Support
- Analyze customer part data to determine tool concept, cavity layout, tool size, cycle time, and cost
- Develop and maintain accurate cost models for tooling in North America, Europe, and China together Sales and HQ in Germany
- Support sourcing by evaluating and selecting appropriate tool shops; maintain up-to-date supplier database
- Ensure all RFQs are supported with realistic technical assumptions, DFM insights, and identified risks
Required Skills & Experience:
- Technical degree or equivalent experience in Tool Engineering, Plastics, or Mechanical Engineering
- Strong knowledge of injection molding tool design, build, troubleshooting, and DFM reviews
- Ability to interpret mold flow results and perform feasibility analysis of article designs
- Familiarity with CAD viewing tools (basic CAD design knowledge is a plus)
- Understanding of hot runner systems, steel grades, and surface technologies (EDM, laser texturing, Variotherm)
- Strong technical project coordination and organizational skills
- Experience managing international toolmakers and supplier communications
- Ability to self-organize and align tasks with project timelines and priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (additional languages a plus)
